Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Christopher le Fleming

Letter No.: VWL4120

The White Gates,
Dorking, Surrey.

7th February, 1951.

Dear Christopher
I am so sorry, but I cannot, after all, keep my word.  We are reducing the numbers this year and there has been some heartburning about it, so you can understand that I do not dare to put in anyone from outside.1

Please give Phyllis my love and tell her that I should have loved to have had her as well if it had been possible.

I suppose you would not care to come and hear the performance on Saturday, March 3rd, 2.45, or failing that to come to a rehearsal with most of the orchestra on Thursday, March 1st, at 7.15?

1.  Probably referring to the size of the orchestra for one of the performances of a a Bach Passion in Dorking.
