A certain Miss Marjorie Jaco¹ has asked me to come to Exeter in May & conduct a tune of mine – on the face of it it seems a rather tall order – But as she refers me to you I write to ask if there is any outstanding reason why I should accept.

1. Marjorie Jaco, an organist and choirmistress, who had studied with Ernest Bullock (later principal of the Royal College of Music) and worked with various distinguished musicians in the 1930s, as we wll as being an examiner for Trinity College of Music. She led various choirs and held several posts in and around Exeter, as well as a period in South Africa. Armstrong Gibbs, among others, dedicated a work to her.
