Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Cecil Armstrong Gibbs
Letter No.: VWL525
From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
[January 1940?]
Dear Armstrong
Can you tell me anything about Aubrey Hickman1 who has written to me for advice – he refers to you as if you knew something about him (I don’t mean that he offers your name as a reference – but simply mentions you). Is he worth encouraging and is there any chance of his getting a scholarship at Oxford as he hopes?
Yrs

1. Hickman later founded Sempre: the Society for Education, Music and Psychology Research. He was a viola player, composer and teacher, and involved in the International Society for Music Education. VW appears to acknowledge Gibbs’ response in VWL1380.

General Notes:
Date speculative; Hickman would have been 18 in 1940 and possibly considering an application for an undergraduate place at Oxford. A reply must have been forthcoming; see VWL1380.
