Dear Brian Trowell,
I am quite well, but the wretched doctor has insisted on my stopping in bed on Monday, so that I cannot come to the dress rehearsal. I am so very sorry; but chiefly for myself, because I know from experiences at that Mission Hall that all is going splendidly. It is just possible, also, that he will refuse me leave to go to the first performance. That would be a terrible blow, again, chiefly for me, but I still hope. But anyway Ursula will be there, & can tell me all about it. She is also coming on Monday for the dress rehearsal.

Preserved with a vocal score of Sir John in Love in which is the following annotation by Brian Trowell: “This was the vocal score used by me for the amateur revival of 1956 and the New Opera Co. professional revival of 1958 at Sadler’s Wells Theatre. (In 1956 the Cambridge University Opera Group staged it at the Arts Theatre, Cambridge). The letters opposite expressed Ralph Vaughan Williams’ thanks & his great regret that illness prevented him from attending the Dress Rehearsal and first night. The MS & typing are, I think, of Mrs Ursula Vaughan Williams. He had attended some earlier rehearsals (even coming to Cambridge in mid winter). Brian Trowell. (RVW was happily able to attend rehearsals and performances in London in 1958.)”
