Dear Arthur

Thank you so much – I have my ups & downs – sometimes I hate it. I’m glad you like the slow movt best – you know that I owe two enormous last moment improvements entirely to you.¹
What I sh^d really like to do is to have composition lessons from you – I usually have my scoring vetted by G.J.²  – & with you to put the stuff right you might between you make a composer of me yet.

2.  Gordon Jacob, whose advice on orchestration was widely sought. He was consulted regularly by VW.
