Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Arnold van Wyk
Letter No.: VWL5112
The White Gates,
Dorking, Surrey,
21st. March, 1951.
Dear Arnold
Here is a photograph. If it will help you once more with your fine music it will add to my pleasure in sending it, so do put your shoulder to the wheel.
I am glad to see that a Symphony by you is being done at a London English concert soon.1
I always find that I want to compose most when I am most busy. When I try to clear things off so as to leave a free time I usually can think of nothing.
Yrs
RVW
(R. Vaughan Williams).
Mr. Arnold Van Wyk,
9, Serpentine Road,
Oranjezicht,
Cape Town, S. Africa.
1. See VWL5110. The first performance of Van Wyk’s symphony was given at the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday 3 July 1951. VW often attended this festival, but not in 1951.
