Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Arnold Barter

Letter No.: VWL1818

From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.

Nov 1 [probably 1943]

Dear Barter

This is splendid – Give your choir my greetings & tell them I wish I was with them.1
I venture to send a small donation to the funds in the place of my ordinary subscription

Now I want to bore you with the latest Bee in my Bonnet – Do, if you have not done so already, read the enclosed?  It seems to me the only solution.
I am as you know a convinced nationalist in all that concerns our individual & cultural life – But I believe this can only be achieved by living in unity with other nations in all those matters which are our common interest.2
Yrs

2. VW was being particularly active about Federal Union in 1943, hence the date assumed – see VWL1745 to Ralph Wedgwood: ‘Being a complete ignoramus is not going to stand in the way of thanking you for your splendid article in the Times.  One sentence seemed to adumbrate the particular Bee in my Bonnet – Federal Union – is it going to be issued as a pamphlet – I do hope so.’
