Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Arnold Barter

Letter No.: VWL2362

The White Gates,
Dorking, Surrey.

2nd February, 1952.

Dear Barter

I am so sorry to hear that you are ill in hospital.  You must get well soon and go on with your great work.  I feel sure that while you lie in bed you plan great ideas.
I was so glad to have even those few minutes with you the other day.  I thought it was a perfect scandal that they did not ask you, in your responsible position in Bristol music, to do the ceremony and the lunch.  Still, I don’t suppose that you appreciate Bristol milk!1
Yrs

1. VW had been awarded an honorary D.Mus by Bristol University on 14th December. Harvey’s Bristol Milk is a rather sweet sherry, which VW liked a great deal.
