The White Gates,
Dorking.

[30 March 1942]

Dear Miss Spurgeon1

I am so glad your father was able to sing in the Passion on the 21st – I thought it was an outstanding performance and the choir covered themselves with glory.
I hope you will both sing in the Festival next year.
Yours sincerely

R. Vaughan Williams

1. Miss Spurgeon wrote to VW in 1942 saying that her father had joined a choral society for the first time on his retirement and had sung in every Leith Hill Musical Festival until he was 81 [see MS Mus. 1714/1/14, ff.52-53]. This is a good example of the trouble which VW took to answer such correspondence.
