Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Alice Sumsion

Letter No.: VWL2547

The White Gates,
Dorking.

November 18th 1952.

Dear Alice
I have talked things over with Ursula and we have come to the conclusion that we should prefer a pub if there is one … either the Bell of the New Inn, or anything else good.  Would you therefore be very kind and book us two rooms, if possible on the same floor, and accomodation1 for Beagley and the car for the nights of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday.
I kept your lovely cake for a tea party the other day, and over-ate myself scandalously on it.
 Love from RVW
   R. Vaughan Williams.

P.S Dear Alice,
I think a pub would be better as we can a) be late for meals, and b) give parties, and c) drink … though THAT part of the affair rests on John’s arrangements for R.!  I am so glad John Junior has met the Langstaffs.  I am devoted to them all.  Do you suppose Fluff wash is what the slums call Bag wash? or what I do in Foreign Parts, and call rough dried?????
Love to you both.
