Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Alan Frank (OUP)

Letter No.: VWL2925

From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.

December 25th 1954.

Dear Frank,

I don’t think I like Christopher Fry, as a librettist, I mean. Sorry about A. P. H., but I fear you are right.1

1. VW was thinking of writing a school operetta and had been discussing the possibility of approaching A.P. Herbert for a libretto – but Frank reported that independent enquiry had indicated that Herbert was ‘not in very good shape these days’ and suggested Christopher Fry instead. The idea of an operetta does not seem to have been taken further.
