London, N.W.1.

April 2nd 1955.

Dear Frank,

I enclose a letter from John Cannell; I have told him that I have no objection to his makeing1 the necessary alterations, and that I feel sure that neither will you.2
Did Anne Macnaghten ever send you Dorothy Gow’s string quartet? 3
I quite understand about the S.P.N.M.4

1. sic.
2. Cannell had asked for permission to make some alterations in Household Music, Catalogue of Works 1940/4. The nature of the alterations is not clear from the correspondence.
3. VW had urged Ann Macnaghten to perform this work of Dorothy Gow in about 1932 – see VWL1149. In his reply Frank wrote: ‘I think it is a first class work of its type, but unfortunately, with modern chamber music being about the  most difficult category for a publisher to handle, we were unable to take it on’.
