Thank you for your letter and enclosure. Much as I should like $1000 – I don’t think I could undertake to write a work for it. If I ever do write a suitable one we might send it to them and see if we could get $1000 out of them!1

1. Quoted in OUP files; the letter was a response to a request forwarded from the Louisville Symphony Orchestra to commission a work from VW. The original request had been sent in summer 1953 (see VWL2707) and VW had declined, and they had now written again with the request with no time limit.
