26th September, 1951.
Dear Frank,
Can you tell me anything about a composer called Spoliansky? I heard some film music by him the other day which, of its kind I thought very good, and was particularly struck by the competence of the orchestration.
I wonder if there is any way in which I could see the score for a few days so as to find out how he did certain things. Of course, judging by the name he will probably not let me see the score under £100,000, in which case I shall just have to do without it.1
R. Vaughan Williams
1. Mischa Spoliansky, who had written the music of the film Happy go lovely, was delighted at VW’s interest and sent him all the sketches he still had and arranged for the full score to be sent to him from Elstree studios. See VWL2281.
