Dear Adrian
I am very sorry to say that I have been obliged to cancel my concert of May 26 – The story is as follows – the concert was, almost entirely, for the purpose of bringing out the new symphony of Elizabeth McConchy1 whichI admire very much and which I did not think had had a fair deal – I only heard yesterday that the Contemporary Music Society propose to do it at their concert with the BBC orchestra in April – This practically takes away the point of my concert and I feel that I must keep my ammunition for another attack of a similar nature later on.
I do hope that this change of plans has not upset your engagement book or otherwise inconvenienced you much –
My love Ann2
Yrs
R Vaughan Williams

General Notes:
This probably refers to the performance of Maconchy’s Symphony on April 27 1950 given by the London Contemporary Music Centre and the BBC, and broadcast. Adrian Boult was in fact the conductor of this performance.
