Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Adrian Boult

Letter No.: VWL3363

From R. Vaughan Williams,
10, Hanover Terrace,
Regents Park,
London, N.W.1.

August 18th 1956.

My dear Adrian,

I am stopping for the week end with Gerald Finzi, and he showed me your letter to him, and now I have received yours to me.  Gerald seems to think that an additional grant has already been made. If not, I am all in favour.
We enjoyed your party so much, and were only sorry Ann was not there.
My leg is practically well now. I walked round about half the Avebury circle dyke!  we also went to the Spencer Memorial Chapel – here I saw what puffy legs really could be.1
Yrs

1. VW had been suffering from phlebitis in his leg. The Sandham Memorial Chapel at Burghclere is decorated by murals by Stanley Spencer depicting scenes around Salonica during his service there in the First World War. There are hospital scenes depicting soldiers with swollen legs.
