Letter from Patrick Hadley and Henry Balfour Gardiner to Ralph Vaughan Williams
Letter No.: VWL4610
12 April 1935
That was a great occasion the other evening – one of the more important events that have occurred during my lifetime. The hall seemed to be stirred to its depths and everyone with whom I talked was equally spell-bound. Paddy.1
Many congratulations on the success of your symphony. Paddy declares it has ‘Knocked Europe sideways’.
H Balfour Gardiner
1. Probably Patrick Hadley. The Symphony no. 4 had its first performance on April 10 at the Queens’ Hall.
