The White Gates
December 26 [1944]
Dear Martin
I liked having a letter from you very much.
We wanted news of your Joan because we had heard she was unwell – how difficult it is for anyone so active as she is to be told to go slow. Easier for me who has had a habit of breaking bones, but yet not too easy. It is good news that your work is out or nearly out. I am as glad to have heard it, enough to find it lovely.
I think that Ralph has done the best for his old home. I hope the fact of the steep hill will save the road from change.
Love & all wishes for better days from us.
