Dear Mr Abraham
Many thanks for the Wagner book. I wanted to refresh my memory as to what he said about the trumpets in the Finale – but I also thought I remembered a sort of “programme” which is attached to the symphony – the hero running into battle and so on – did he also write another essay on the 9th symphony or am I dreaming?
Does it comes in ‘Ueber das dirigiren’?1 Can you help me?
Yrs sincerely
R Vaughan Williams

1. sic. Wagner’s essay on conducting, Über das Dirigieren. Wagner also wrote an essay on Beethoven’s 9th symphony Zum Vortrag der neunten Symphonie Beethovens, published in 1873.
