Letter from Ralph Vaughan Williams to Cedric Thorpe Davie
Letter No.: VWL765
From R. Vaughan Williams,
The White Gates,
Westcott Road,
Dorking.
Monday [about 5th August 1935]
Dear Davie
I have directed the O.U.P to send you proof and M.S. both of my Symphony and of my new Choral Work.1 When corrected please send them to me here (registered). Keep a strict account of the time employed as I understand that payment for this kind of work is by the hour – but don’t stint time on that account – though I shall be glad to have them as soon as possible.
Send each separately to me as soon as it is finished.
Yrs
R. Vaughan Williams

General Notes:
Signed by VW. The year is in the hand of the recipient, but the envelope bears no postmark to fix the month. However the letter clearly precedes VWL766. The Fourth Symphony score was published in 1935 and Five Tudor Portraits was ‘rough finished’ by June 1935 so engraving of the vocal score might have been well under way by August, since it had been promised to the performers for November (see VWL827).
