Dear Cedric,

The other day Gerald¹ made my flesh creep by an account he had had from you of the parlous state of the Purcell Society: and when I said I should like to help, he said that he wasn’t sure that it wasn’t too late already. This does not agree with the very optimistic typed report I have just received saying that Novellos have taken over and all is well – as far as I can make out.  If help is really wanted I should very much like to do my bit; a small sum now, and later on, in a few months time, I may be able to tap a fund which will enable me to give some more.² But I AM NOT KEEN ON PUTTING MONEY INTO NOVELLO’S POCKET!
If I decide to send a cheque, will you tell me to whom I ought to send it?
