Sir,
To commemorate the diamond jubilee of the Folk Song Society which falls to-day a movement is being set afoot to endow for all time the library devoted to folk music at Cecil Sharp House. For this purpose a widely representative national committee has been formed and an appeal is being launched to raise the sum of £50,000.
This library, the only one of its kind in the world, not only includes books, prints and manuscripts, dealing with all aspects of folk music but also field and other recordings on disc and tape of country singers and instrumentalists, as well as folk dances. It provides opportunity for study and research to scholars from all parts of the worlds.
We, the undersigned, are among the many who feel sure that this appeal will receive the sympathy and support not only of all music lovers but of all those who cherish their national traditions.
Yours faithfully,
R. Vaughan Williams, President, Colin S. Anderson, Arthur Bryant, Margot Fonteyn Arias, Trustees.
