Feb 13th [1903]
Gentlemen1
Have I your leave to print the words of the following Rossetti sonnets (‘House of Life’ Nos XIX, XLVIII, XLIX, L, LI and LII) in the programme of Messrs. Broadwood’s concert (March 12th) and Miss Verne’s, also in March?
Yrs faithfully
R. Vaughan Williams
1. This letter was addressed to the firm of Ellis and White (Frank Startridge Ellis and David White), publisher of Rossetti’s Ballads and Sonnets; the directors in 1903 were J.J. Holdsworth and George Smith. VW used the texts in Willow-wood. See VWL5190 for a subsequent letter on the subject.
2. The Broadwood firm of piano makers had inaugurated a chamber concert series. It is not clear to which of the Verne sisters VW refers.
